TLS 1.0 & 1.1 Switch Off 2024
Starting December 2, 2024, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) will no longer support connections from older operating systems, including Windows XP, Vista, Windows 2000, 7, and 8. This decision is due to the use of outdated versions of Transport Layer Security (TLS) on these systems, which are now vulnerable and do not meet modern security standards for data submissions.
What is TLS?
TLS or Transport Layer Security, is a protocol that is used to ensure your information is securely submitted. It encrypts the data that is being sent to the ATO, keeping it private and protected.
How Can I Check?
If you are unsure what version of TLS you are running, you can always check by going to the following link:
https://browserleaks.com/tls. This tool will show which TLS versions are supported by your current browser and system.
Next Steps:
- If TLS 1.2 or 1.3 are ticked, no action is needed.
- If TLS 1.0 or 1.1 are ticked, you will need to update your system or upgrade to a newer operating system to avoid service disruptions.
How Will This Affect Me?
If you are unsure of which version of Windows you are currently using, you can check by going to the ‘Start menu’ and selecting ‘System Information’. Under ‘OS Name’, you will find the name of the operating system you are running.
Please note: We do not support any version of Windows below 10. To ensure the best experience with the program, we strongly encourage you to use Windows 10 or 11 and run the latest version of the software, which can be found here:
